Does Vitamin C Increase HGH?
Vitamin C’s health benefits and needs in humans have long been understood. So does vitamin C increase HGH? Vitamin C HGH boosting properties are not well known but are there nonetheless. The minimum recommended daily amount can easily be consumed by a normal well balanced diet. To see the benefits associated with bodybuilding and HGH require additional supplementation.
About Vitamin C
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a micronutrient very important for health. It is found in food but can also be taken in supplement form.
A deficiency of vitamin C causes a disease called scurvy. This is why it is on the World Health Organisations Model List of Essential Medicines (1).
It has a range of important functions which include:
- Protect cells
- Keep cells healthy
- Maintain healthy
- Blood vessels
- Healing wounds
- Immune system functioning
Adults need 40mg a day which is easily obtained through diet and found in foods such as:
- Citrus fruits
- Brussel sprouts
If you take a vitamin C supplement then do not exceed more than 2,000mg a day.
This is the upper tolerable where you are unlikely to hurt yourself. Vitamin C can have some unpleasant side effects if too much is taken:
- Stomach pain
- Red hot flashes
This tends to happen at a dose in excess of 1,000mg.
Vitamin C is used by bodybuilders for a few different reasons.
It helps recovery by assisting protein metabolism and it can help increase testosterone by lowering cortisol and stress.
Vitamin C HGH connection
One study (2) of 108 men and women, found that peak stimulated HGH was positively associated with vitamin C.
These were increases at a basal HGH, overnight maximum HGH and mean HGH secretion.
They conclude that micronutrients like vitamin C are strongly and uniquely associated with stimulated and endogenous spontaneous HGH secretion.
It has been observed in the past that high doses of vitamin C can accelerate weight loss but without obvious cause.
The answer may be in the HGH boost seen in this study. Standard doses to achieve this boost are typically 500-2,000mg.
Vitamin C is one of the best known micronutrients and supplements in the world.
It seems to be able to push up HGH levels at higher doses – 500-2,000mg.
This is a well dosed standard vitamin C product:
